Yaz/Yasmin
Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Suffolk/Nassau Counties, New York
Two of the most popular oral contraceptives on the market are Yaz and Yasmin. Both products contain ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. The only differences between the two contraceptives are the number of inactive pills packaged with each set. Yaz and Yasmin have been linked to health issues related to blood clots. If you have taken Yaz and Yasmin and have experienced health problems, the product liability lawyers at Silberstein, Awad, & Miklos, P.C. are here to help.
Yaz/Yasmin Indications
Like most other oral contraceptives, Yaz and Yasmin is indicated for women who want to prevent pregnancy. In addition, Bayer, the makers of Yaz/Yazmin also claim that the products can address the following conditions:
- Treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
- Treatment of acne vulgaris
Problems with Yaz/Yasmin
Ethinyl estrodiol is common in almost all oral contraceptives and has been approved by the FDA since 1943. Drospirenone, however, is a new ingredient and seems to be linked with some very serious side effects putting Yaz/Yasmin in the crosshairs for pharmaceutical error litigation.
Drospirenone is a progestin that can elevate potassium in the blood, which may lead to issues with clotting. Some of the medical problems associated with Yaz/Yasmin include:
- Hyperkalemia
- High blood pressure
- Strokes
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Heart arrhythmias
- Death
If you are concerned about these potential issues, please consult with your physician immediately and find out if it is safe for you to stop taking them. Only your doctor can advise you on the medical dangers involved.
Product Liability
Because of the apparent link between these conditions and Yaz/Yasmin, many pharmaceutical error lawsuits have been filed throughout the U.S. The FDA recently sent a warning letter to the manufacturer, Bayer, about some questionable testing that was performed in an overseas plant. Several batches of the product that were not properly tested arrived in the United States for distribution.
Because medications are inherently dangerous, the manufacturer of the product may be found strictly liable under product liability law. This means that you do not have to prove they were actually negligent in releasing the product to the public.
If you have taken Yaz/Yasmin and have experienced any health issues that may be related to the product, you should first talk to your doctor to find out about available options. Next, please contact the New York product liability lawyers Silberstein, Awad, & Miklos, P.C. to schedule a free initial consultation. We want to ensure the safety of all Americans taking this potentially dangerous medication.
