AEDs in Public Places

New York has established a Public Access to Defibrillation (PAD) program to make automated external defibrillators (AEDs) accessible and available for use in public and private areas. The areas targeted for this program are areas where many people gather or places where people live who have a high risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The American Heart Association (AHA) strongly suggests that AEDs are placed in specific public areas such as:

  • Elementary Schools
  • High Schools
  • Colleges
  • Sports Arenas
  • Office Complexes
  • Business Buildings
  • Shopping Malls
  • Sports Arenas
  • Doctor's Offices

Additional recommended AED placement by the AHA is in public places where at least one cardiac arrest has occurred within the past five years. The AHA also strongly encourages all ambulances and EMS first-response vehicles be equipped with and AED, a semiautomatic defibrillator, or a manual defibrillator.

The people maintaining any public or private area that has an AED are strongly encouraged to form an AED program. An AED program entails that:

  • The local EMS office should be notified when anyone acquires an AED
  • Quality control needs to be monitored by a medical authority or licensed physician
  • Anyone responsible for or who will operate the AED needs to be trained to properly operate the AED and to perform CPR

About AEDs

AED stands for automated external defibrillator and is a computerized medical device that can check a person’s heart rhythm. An AED can recognize and recommend when a person needs a shock. Voice prompts, text messages, and lights help walk the rescuer through the steps that need to be taken to save the victim.

All AED systems are easy to use and extremely accurate. All brands of AEDs require the same steps and function in a similar manner. The AHA does not have a preference on any specific model. Anyone can learn to operate an AED with a few hours of training.

If you have suffered a personal injury due to the lack of an AED in required public places, please contact the personal injury lawyers at Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. today to schedule a free initial consultation about your personal injury case.
