What To Do After an Auto Accident

Auto accidents are, of course, common on busy New York roadways. Whether you are involved in a "simple" scrape from a rear-end bump or a collision involving multiple vehicles and multiple injures, or even death, it is critical that you consult with someone who can be on your side. In the New York area, start with auto accident attorneys at Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. for a free consultation.

Immediately after a collision, there are some basic auto accident instructions on what to do. These instructions involve such factors such as identifying witnesses and not making any comments to other persons, other than answering questions posed by police, about how the accident happened.

Once the accident cleanup is complete and you have left the scene, or been released from the hospital, here some additional guidelines of what to do after an auto accident.

  • Contact your auto insurance company to report the accident, even if you do not believe you will be making a claim against your policy. It is important to avoid giving a recorded statement to your insurance provider or to the insurance company of the other drivers involving in the accident, at least until you have contacted an experienced personal injury lawyer.
  • As soon as you are able, write down everything you can remember about the accident, including details such as road conditions, weather and other traffic.
  • Communicate with your employer about your injuries. Obtain any documents necessary from your physicians if you are unable to return to work right away. Ask about the number of sick (injury) leave you have available to take.
  • Start a written journal of your emotional, physical and financial issues related to the accident. Writing in this journal at least once a day, recording doctor's appointments, etc. can be quite helpful should you need the information as part of a legal case.
  • Keep all receipts related to the accident.
  • Consult with highly qualified car accident lawyers as soon as possible to find out the merits of your case, and what your next steps should be.
