Subtle brain injury, also known as mild traumatic brain injury, is the most prevalent type of head injury and can cause significant short- and long-term disability despite its label. Many of these injuries go undetected and untreated because many of them do not appear to be medical emergencies at first. It is important to note that a loss of consciousness or a hit to the head is not always necessary for significant brain damage to occur.

Definition of subtle brain injury

Medically speaking, a subtle brain injury fits the following criteria:

  • Loss of consciousness lasts approximately 30 minutes or less, though it may not occur at all
  • Post-traumatic memory loss does not continue past 24 hours
  • Patient scores a 13 to 15 on the Glasgow Coma Scale 30 minutes after the injury. For more information about the classification of traumatic brain injury, please visit our symptomatology of traumatic brain injury page

Symptoms of subtle brain injury

Medical attention should be pursued if any of the following symptoms are present after any kind of head injury:

  • Physical - These may include headache, vision problems, nausea or vomiting, sleep disturbances, fatigue, numbness, tingling, loss of sensation, or any other abnormalities
  • Cognitive - Problems with concentration, perception, attention, memory, speech, motor skills, or other difficulty controlling movement
  • Behavioral - Any changes in behavior or emotional state

No matter how minor a head injury appears to be at first, it is crucial that the injury be checked out by a physician immediately. Permanent brain damage and even death can result from any head injury that involves any degree of loss of consciousness, memory loss, altered mental state (disorientation, confusion), or deficit of nerve function.
