Toxic Exposure and TBI
While the leading causes of brain injury continues to be car accidents, falls, sporting accidents, and firearm-related, there are thousands of TBI cases every year caused by exposure to toxic substances. The consequences of toxic exposure can be just as serious as a bullet to the brain. There are several hundred substances that have the capacity to do severe brain damage. Fortunately, most of us will never have to be exposed to them. However, several of these substances are all around us. Here are just a few of the more common substances that can cause TBI:
- Carbon monoxide - This compound is one of the most common causes of TBI through hypoxia (brain damage due to lack of oxygen to the brain). Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas, which makes it impossible to detect with only the five human senses. This also makes it one of the most dangerous substances. Carbon monoxide poisoning often results in death since the victim usually loses consciousness before being able to flee the source of exposure. Survivors of carbon monoxide poisoning have decreased mental abilities, emotional difficulties, and a host of other common TBI symptoms.
- Metals - Lead, mercury, and manganese are the most prevalent metals that are known to cause TBI. Lead is particularly damaging to developing children. Survivors of high exposure to these metals exhibit several mental and physical deficiencies, emotional problems, and other common TBI symptoms.
- Combustibles and solvents - Gasoline and other petroleum distillates, glues, paints, paint thinners, and hundreds of other organic chemicals are known toxins. Exposure to these chemicals can cause a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional irregularities.
- Pesticides and herbicides - It should be no surprise that some pesticides and herbicides can cause brain damage. After all, their purpose is to kill things. Acute exposure to these substances often causes dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, confusion, and disorientation.
