Brain Tumor Malpractice
Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, New York City, NY Medical Malpractice
Brain tumors are cancerous growths or masses of abnormal cells that develop in a person’s brain tissue. While some brain tumors are benign, many of them are malignant and can have devastating effects on the entire body if left untreated. Brain tumors either start out growing in the brain, or begin growing elsewhere in the body and then spread into the brain. Breast cancer and lung cancer are the two most common types of cancer that spread into the brain.
Because most severe symptoms of brain tumors do not occur until the tumor has metastasized (grown), it’s all too easy for physicians and medical professionals to misdiagnose a brain tumor, or miss it entirely, until its advanced stages – when it becomes especially dangerous and difficult to treat. But this is not an excuse for failing to properly address early warning signs of brain tumors and other brain injuries.
Symptoms of Brain Tumors
Around half of patients with brain tumors suffer from chronic headaches. Headaches caused by brain tumors have a few distinct characteristics that distinguish them from headaches caused by other, benign conditions. Brain tumor headaches are often worsened by bending over, coughing, or sneezing. Nausea and vomiting also tend to be paired with the headaches, which can be painful enough to rouse a person from sleep.
Brain tumor headaches will steadily worsen and become more frequent, eventually turning into constant pain that cannot easily be relieved by medication.
A few other symptoms of brain tumors include:
• Seizures
• Vision and hearing problems
• Speech changes
• Memory loss
• Numbness in arms or legs
If you exhibit one or more of these symptoms, your doctor should order a series of diagnostic tests to screen for brain tumors. Some of the more common brain tumor diagnostic tests include MRIs, CT Scans, neurological exams, Angioram, spinal tap, and more.
Misdiagnosis or Late Diagnosis of Brain Tumors
If a physician fails to administer the proper diagnostic tests, or misinterprets the results, this is grounds for a medical malpractice claim. In the past, doctors have misdiagnosed brain tumors as migraine headaches, Alzheimer’s disease, meningitis, and other conditions – sometimes treating patients for these conditions and doing further harm to them in the process.
Diligent and attentive doctors can catch a brain tumor early on by listening to their patients’ symptoms, ordering the appropriate tests, and correctly interpreting the results.
If you or a loved one with a brain injury has been the victim of late diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or other types of medical malpractice, you need the help of experienced brain injury attorneys who can protect your rights and guide you through this difficult time.
