Cervical Cancer

The Canadians have completed round one of the cervical cancer screening trial. Preliminary results indicate that a DNA screening test for precancerous lesions is effective around 94% of the time. That is compared to 55% for the Pap test.

Current technology requires a cervical specimen to be analyzed by technicians under a microscope for abnormalities. The new test also requires cervical samples but the procedure is automated to look for DNA variations found with cervical cancer.

The new test when coupled with new cervical vaccines should greatly reduce the amount of occurring cervical cancer. However the new test is not in general usage and there are many cases where cervical cancer is misdiagnosed or if there is a delay in diagnosis.
