Trial Lawyers Care - 9/11 Victims and Families
United States Supreme Court Justice Breyer announced:
“Trial Lawyers Care is about what’s best in our profession. It is a profession with a spirit of public service. It is a profession that tries to help; and it is a profession that responds when asked to help.”
Trial Lawyers Care was born of a simple desire by leading trial lawyers to help victims of the World Trade Center disaster. Silberstein, Awad & Miklos was there from the beginning, at its formation, implementation and training of participating attorneys. It exceeded everyone’s expectations. It provided free legal services, representing more than 1700 families, and secured awards of more than $2 billion.
No legal fee was charged.
As a leading national reporter wrote, “It was a job of impossible proportions; an undertaking without precedent. It became the largest pro bono project in history, fulfilling a pledge to donate hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees that represented tens of thousands of hours of donated legal work totaling more than a hundred years of free legal help.”
Trial Attorney, Mr. Awad, an officer of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, participated in the creation of this free legal clinic. He served as one of the leading clinical instructors, training all lawyers on how to represent the survivors before the Congressional Victims Compensation Fund. This included educating other lawyers on the victim funds eligibility requirements, the client process itself, and the methodology for calculating economic damages.
Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. represented families whose husbands and fathers, serving as police officers and firemen, died trying to help others. “If a firefighter or police officer can enter a burning building to save the lives of people t hey do not know, then we lawyers can certainly represent their families, free of any legal charge.”
Representing the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks was an extraordinarily worthwhile undertaking in the firm’s history, and for every attorney and every staff member who volunteered in all sorts of capacities. No one associated with Trial Lawyers Care would trade this experience for any other in his or her career.
DAS - Dominico American Society
Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. provides free legal services, education and resources through a not for profit organization to assist the Latino community integrating into the American way of life. Programs for economic development of small businesses, enrollment of citizens as voters, educating and training the youth in the areas of applied technology and offering seminars and programs to teach financial and managerial skills are all part of the mission of DAS.
Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. devotes hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to facilitate the achievement of these goals. Legal clinics on such topics as home mortgages, workers compensation, Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, immigration, lead poisoning prevention, patient safety and other legal topics are offered through the firm’s attorneys.
Mr. Awad currently serves as President of the Board of Directors. He and his family were recognized by the organization with its 2007 award for Outstanding Community Service and Devotion. The law firm sponsors such events as Turkey giveaways at Thanksgiving for the families of all children who participate in afterschool programs, Santa Claus gift-giving at Christmas time, and education competitions such as chess tournaments and moot court afterschool programs. The National Center for Victims of Crime
More than 24 million Americans are victimized by crime each year. The National Center for Victims of Crime and its affiliate legal services organization, the National Crime Victim Bar Association serve many crime victims. The mission of the organization is to help individuals and families rebuild their lives after having been hurt by crime. We serve as advisory directors on the board of directors of the National Crime Victim Bar Association. We devote our time and help finance the training and education of victim support organizations, criminal justice agencies, lawyers and allied professionals serving victims of crime. For example, we teach social workers, paralegals working at District Attorney Offices, nurses who served as the first line in helping rape and assault victims and state-funded agency advocates, all with the goal of obtaining services and compensation to try to overcome the terrible consequences of having been a victim of violent crime.
NYS Community Organizations
Our law firm has worked with, and for, many community agencies with the overall mission of protecting and preserving the rights, responsibilities and privileges granted by the United States and the New York State Constitution. These agencies and community-based organizations include NY ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), Citizen Action, and CORE (Congress of Racial Equality).
We also support and finance a variety of religious and police organization endeavors, including recreational and sporting leagues. We devote considerable time and energy for such efforts as teaching high school students about the practice of law in careers in law and the judicial branch of government.
Support Groups
Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. cares about the community it serves and wants anyone going through hard times to have support available to them. We have compiled a list of support groups for patients and survivors of cancer, stroke, heart attack, brain injury and other health issues, as well as support for their families and the families of those that have died.
