The earlier the treatment, the better the prognosis for patients with cancer. Unfortunately, there are times when a patient's cancer goes undiagnosed and untreated, even through the patient is presenting classic complaints and symptoms that should alert a careful physician to the possibility of cancer.

 

A delay in diagnosing and treating cancer or other malignancies harms a patient because as the cancer grows and spreads over time, the stage of the cancer increases in severity and the prognosis for the future worsens. The intensity of medical treatment a patient needs can greatly increase, necessitating more rigorous surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

In another case, we sued the Chief of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Dean of Medicine at a major university hospital because that physician misdiagnosed the signs and symptoms that a young woman was presenting indicative of a breast cancer known as inflammatory breast cancer. A delay of four months hurt this woman because her chances for successful treatment were reduced significantly by the failure to start treatment. Because of this case and others, this man was forced to step down and his license to practice medicine was suspended after a state investigation.
