Motorcycle Accidents Facts
The motorcycle is becoming the new vehicle of choice for hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. Not surprisingly, considering the superior fuel economy and many other conveniences that a motorcycle provides. City dwellers who are fed up with the frustrations of limited parking and public transportation find motorcycles a welcome relief. And, as any motorcyclist will agree, they are a much more fun and exciting way of getting from one place to the next than a typical passenger vehicle.
Motorcycles do have their drawbacks, however, particularly when it comes to safety. While a helmet and protective wear will significantly decrease your risk of serious personal injury or death in a motorcycle accident, there is only so much that these safety measures can protect you from. Here are some statistics to keep in mind:
- Motorcyclists make up 10 percent of traffic fatalities, despite the fact that motorcycles only make up 2 percent of registered vehicles on our roadways.
- Motorcyclists and their passengers make up 98 percent of fatalities in vehicle accidents that involve a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle.
- Individuals who are involved in a traffic accident are 34 times more likely to die if operating a motorcycle rather than a passenger vehicle.
- Less than one in ten accidents involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle occur on interstate highways. Six out of ten occur on urban roadways.
- Of every 100 motorcyclists killed in accidents who were not wearing a helmet, approximately 37 of these would have survived had they been wearing one. Learn more about motorcycle helmet laws in New York.
- Males make up 97 percent of motorcycle fatalities.
