What to Do Following a Motorcycle Accident
It is a fact of life that even the most careful, defensive motorcycle riders get in accidents. If you are ever involved in a motorcycle accident, there are some very important steps to take to ensure your safety, the safety of others, and to protect yourself in case litigation might result from the accident. Whether or not you are at fault, you should be sure to do all of the following:
- If you are able to move, do everything you can to make sure everyone else involved in the accident is safe from further harm. If there is risk of fire or hazardous chemical exposure, move any injured parties away from danger immediately. Call 911, or send someone else to make the call.
- Move away from the roadway if possible and secure the scene. Use hazard lights, flares, or any other available warning device to alert other drivers.
- Write down the names, addresses, phone numbers, and license plate numbers of all involved parties and witnesses. Be sure to get insurance information from everyone directly involved with the accident.
- Call the police and file an accident report.
- If you are injured, or suspect you might be injured, go to the hospital immediately. If you are offered medical attention at the scene, do not refuse it. It is likely that you will not be in the proper state of mind to make the best decision for yourself at this time. Adrenaline can severely impair your ability to feel pain or notice any other mental or physical irregularities you may be experiencing. Insurance companies are notorious for trying to deny claims made weeks or months after an accident, and receiving immediate medical attention can establish the legitimacy of your claim.
- Gather as much information about the accident as possible and write it down immediately. Take photographs of the scene if possible, using a cell phone camera if nothing better is available. Any and all information should be recorded, including road conditions, travel speeds, direction of travel, and any other pertinent information.
- Obtain a copy of the police report and check it thoroughly to make sure it matches your account of the accident.
