Motorcycle Licensing Requirements

Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, New York

  • Apply for a motorcycle permit

Once you pass the written test you will be issued a permit that is valid for one year. You can retest for one additional year if you need it.

When riding under your permit, you must be with a licensed supervising rider age 21 or older. They must be within mile of you at all times.

Without a License or Permit

If you do not already have a license or permit, you must do everything above, but you must also enroll and pass a pre-licensing course or approved driver education course.

Before you take your road test, you are encouraged to practice under your permit for at least 30 hours, with 10 hours devoted to heavy traffic situations. This will give you plenty of riding experience before you undertake the road test.
