A recent study by the American Cancer Society, http://www.cancer.org, published in the May 15, 2007 issue of Cancer discloses that almost one third of women failed to receive the recommended surgical treatment for the disease.Data from nine states found they were risk factors associated with the disease. It is estimated that ovarian cancer takes the lives of 14,000 women in the United States each year. The disease generally is diagnosed at an advanced stage. The five-year survival rate is 30 to 40% when all of the tumor can be resected and falls to about 15% when all of the tumors cannot be resected. Obviously early diagnosis and treatment has a significant effect on survivability. Certainly the right treatment is critical to avoiding the deadly nature of the disease.
