Spinal Cord Injuries

Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens, New York

Preventing Spinal Cord Injuries

An estimated 11,000 people are diagnosed with spinal cord injuries each year, many of those resulting from auto accidents, falls or diving accidents. Spinal cord injuries are some of the most serious injuries a person can sustain, potentially affecting an individual's ability to move, work and communicate.

Spinal cord injuries that happened as a result of someone else's negligence are far too common. If you need help sorting through the legal aspects of a spinal cord injury in your family, please schedule a free consultation with our personal injury attorneys. We have offices in Brooklyn, Long Island and other areas of New York.

Fortunately, experts say there are a number of ways you can reduce your chances of incurring a life-changing spinal cord injury.

Wear your seat belt. A large number of spinal cord injuries result from a passenger or driver not wearing a seat belt and being thrown from the vehicle during an auto accident.

Dive smart. Always check water levels prior to diving into any type of water. "Safe" water levels are generally 9 to 12 feet deep. Look for problematic debris. Always dive with your arms in front of you, and never swim or dive when you have been drinking or under the influence of drugs.

Be aware of sports-related issues. To be spine-safe, contact sports like football require that you wear a helmet at all times. Wear all recommended safety gear for your sport and replace worn or outdated safety gear, as well. Do not participate when you are sick or overly tired. Avoid blocking or hitting with the top of your head. Always wear a helmet when on a bicycle, too.

Take precautions to avoid falls. Always have someone hold a ladder when you climb, and make sure the ladder is sturdy. Consider hiring professionals for any type of household project that requires climbing onto your roof. "Fall-proof" your home by removing hazards, like loose rugs. Install handrails where needed on stairs.

Be safe with guns. Did you know guns can cause spinal cord injuries, as well? In fact, one bullet can cause paralysis in a split second. Make sure any guns in your home are safely locked away and unloaded when stored.
