Spinal Cord Injuries Lawyers
Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island
Spinal cord injuries are almost always serious. Even with the ones that can be treated with physical rehabilitation, any type of injury to the spinal cord is never to be taken lightly. Victims can be in positions where they're unable to walk, talk and perform the day-to-day tasks that were once a part of their normal routine. Spinal cord injuries can also lead to long-term, recurring issues, also.
What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
The main cause of spinal cord injuries are blows to the spine which fracture or dislocate vertebrae. The damage is immediate, beginning when pieces of bone, discs, or ligaments strike or rip into the spinal cord itself. Though the majority of spinal cord injuries don't sever the spine fully, they do fracture and compress some vertebrae. This leads to the harming of the delicate axons, which are the nerve elements that act as conduits for signals from the brain to the rest of the body.
An Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury
An incomplete spinal cord injury is one in which the spinal cord's ability to relay messages from the brain isn't entirely lost. Through expert treatment and dedicated rehabilitation, damage to the nervous system can be minimized and some abilities can be restored over the course of time. Over the course of time, those with incomplete injuries will regain function in the areas of the body below the injury.
Complete Spinal Cord Injuries
When the damage is such that a person doesn't have any sensory or motor function below their injury, a complete spinal cord injury has occurred. One true sign that a spinal cord injury is severed is if a person has difficulty breathing. Roughly one-third of neck injuries lead to that person needing respiratory support because the nerves have trouble signaling to the lungs. Though some of these partially heal over time, in other cases that person will need a respirator for life.
Whether the injury is complete or incomplete, many survivors of spinal cord injuries experience common ailments like bowel and bladder problems; ongoing, acute pain; and increased likelihood of heart and breathing problems. The key to successful recovery is dedication. Every day, even seemingly minor complications must be addressed, and a physical therapy program must be closely followed.
