Spinal Cord Injuries
Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, New York City, NY
Of the very many different types of serious personal injuries people suffer, spinal cord injuries can be the most devastating since victims are often left unable to walk, talk, and perform simple, everyday tasks. Of course, traumatic brain injuries are catastrophic, also, but losing the ability to feel, walk and talk seems to be more traumatic to victims and their families. - Automobile accidents
- Motorcycle accidents
- Truck accidents
- Medical mistakes
- Construction site accidents
If your loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury in a vehicle accident, during surgery, or while working at a construction site, you may have a valid legal claim to collect monetary compensation for:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Future earning capacity
- Physical rehabilitation
- Long-term care
Spinal Cord Injury: Quadriplegia vs. Paraplegia
Anatomy of the Spinal Cord
The spinal cord is a very complex part of the human body and is made up of a bundle of nerves that travels from the brain down through your back and is separated into four regions:
- Sacral (tailbone area)
- Lumbar (lower back)
- Thoracic (middle of the back)
- Cervical (neck region)
When one or more of these areas of the spinal column is injured, certain results occur. For instance, injury to the lower part of the spinal cord (the lumbar region) may result in loss of bladder or bowel control. If an injury occurs to the thoracic or cervical region, paralysis will often occur. Quadriplegia refers to the loss of feeling or movement in the head, shoulders, neck, arms and upper chest. Paraplegia is the term that refers to loss of movement or feeling in the stomach area, legs, and feet. Both types of plegia are devastating to the victim and his family.
Despite advances in spinal cord injury research, there is still no cure for spinal cord injuries. There is help, however, in the form of support groups and experienced and compassionate personal injury attorneys who specialize in these very complex injuries.
