The Road to Recovery From A Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries vary in their range of severity, from partial to complete. But chances are, no matter how severe the injury, victims will need to continue at least some degree of medical care for the rest of their lives. If this injury is due to another party's negligence, the victim may be entitled to a monetary award. In the first year alone, a partial injury could cost upwards of $100,000. Complete paralysis (quadriplegia) could cost upwards over $400,000.

At the first stages of recovery, the injured area of the spinal cord will be completely immobilized so it can't move. The cord itself is very delicate and could be injured further. If the spinal cord injury is in the neck, a "halo" device may be used. This completely immobilizes the head. Casts, braces, metal rods and straps can be used as well for all areas of the spine.

At a point in the recovery process, physical therapists become involved. Rehabilitation hospitals are here to help the patient strengthen muscles, retrain them in certain motor skills and basically put them on the path to daily living as quickly as possible. Social workers also assist, especially in helping find the financial resources for needed equipment and attendant care.
