Stroke Information

A stroke can occur anywhere and at any time. The outcome or prognosis often depends on the promptness of the diagnosis and treatment.

There are two basic types of stroke. One is called red stroke or a hemorrhagic stroke. This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts causing blood to spill into the spaces surrounding brain cells. The presence of blood from a broken blood vessel resulted in the term red stroke. The other is called a white stroke or ischemic stroke. This occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted by clot or spasm. In both cases, the brain cells are deprived of blood, nutrients and oxygen. Without proper and timely treatment, brain cells die. This can lead to traditional symptoms of sudden problems such as:

  • Numbness or weakness especially on one side of the body, face, arm or leg
  • Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty in walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds, according to the American Stroke Association. When someone is having a stroke, every second counts. Time is equal to brain, which means that the longer the stroke progresses without treatment the greater the damage can be. The best treatment for a stroke is prevention. The next best treatment is dealing with the underlying cause. Ischemic strokes can be treated with a drug called tPA within a three-hour window. However, recent research suggests that treatment may be beneficial up to four and a half hours after this type of stroke. Hemorrhagic strokes require either surgical intervention or specialized forms of mechanical treatment. In either case, qualified medical care is required immediately. There are certified primary stroke centers throughout the United States which are accredited by The Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditations. A good place to search for a hospital near you is the Quality Check section of The Joint Commission website. The Primary Stroke Center Certification Program uses the Recommendations for Primary Stroke Centers published by The Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association statements for stroke.

In most cases, suffering a stroke requires a person to engage in a rehabilitation program. A good starting point for information is the treatment section of the American Stroke Association website. Another good site for information about strokes is the Medline Plus website.

If you have had a stroke or an ischemic attack (TIA) and were not timely or properly diagnosed or treated by your medical professional or hospital, you may have a valid legal claim against the parties or facilities that treated you. The law firm of Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. has experience in stroke malpractice cases. We will work hard to help you and get the monetary compensation you deserve.

Stroke is the third leading killer in our nation, after heart disease and cancer. The failure to properly diagnose and timely treat a stroke is a leading medical malpractice mistake in our country. Knowledge of the warning signs and what diagnostic options should be made available to you in the hospital may just help save your life.
