Stroke Malpractice -
Delay in Diagnosis & Treatment of a Stroke

 

According to a medical article published in Neurology (www.neurology.org ) psychological distress is associated with a greater risk of stroke, however depressive episodes are not.

 

The study involved more than 20,000 patients residing in the United Kingdom found that lower baseline scores on a mental health inventory are associated with an increased risk of stroke over eight years of follow-up of about 11%. This association indicated that the more distress that one had the greater likelihood of stroke was.

 

The study also found that having a major depressive episode in the last 12 months before the baseline mental health assessment was made did not significantly increased the risk of stroke.

 

Both distress and depression were measured using the five item version of the mental health inventory ( MHI -- 5).

 

While the study had certain limitations such as age range, population sample and difficulty in identifying strokes from hospital records the lesson to be learned from this study is that those of us with highly stressful jobs and lives need to receive good quality, regular medical care. The stressful life can increase your risk of stroke.
