SUV Rollover Accidents
Sport utility vehicle rollovers are a very common cause of auto accidents and fatalities on our nation's roadways. We frequently hear news reports announcing recalls of SUV's that are prone to rollovers, and considering the number of sport utility vehicles on our roads each year, the number of SUV rollover accidents and deaths will only continue to grow as the number of these types of vehicles on our highways continues to grow.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides the following statistics regarding SUV rollovers:
- Each year there are approximately 11,000 passenger vehicles involved in fatal rollover crashes.
- Crashes in which a vehicle rolled over accounted for more than half of all single-vehicle crash deaths.
- Vehicle rollover crashes are very serious because they often result in head injuries. Head trauma is the most frequent type of fatal and nonfatal injury in rollovers.
- The rate of serious injury in passenger vehicle rollover crashes is 36% higher than in crashes where there is no rollover.
- Over 90% of passenger vehicle rollover crashes are single-vehicle crashes, and 8,345 of the 10,142 occupant deaths in 2006 occurred in single-vehicle rollover crashes.
These statistics clearly show that SUV rollover accidents are the very serious, often fatal, cause of many of the crashes on our nation's highways. According to SUV Rollover News, studies show that more than 90% of rollovers occur after a driver has run off the road. This is not referring to vehicles trying to drive on trails away from public roads; rather, it refers to vehicles rolling over off of the pavement after the driver has lost control of the vehicle. Pavement, ditches, soft soil and curbs usually initiate the rollover accident once the vehicle slides off the road.
