Dangerous Toys
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that a fatal accident involving a toy occurs each month. It’s the unthinkable. That products created and designed for children can actually harm them. The product liability lawyers at Silberstein, Awad & Miklos, P.C. are dedicated to identifying these dangers and removing unsafe products from the market.
Toys with small parts that present swallowing and choking hazards usually pose the greatest danger to young children. Toys with sharp edges have the potential to harm a child if thrown or landed on and heavy toys can hurt a child if thrown. Here is a list of things to look for when examining your child’s new or handed down toy for the first time:
1. Be wary of items marketed on the internet with no research or safety information.
2. Be extra cautious of new items that are unique with no comparable history safety reports.
3. Watch out for battery operated toys. Do not allow children under the age of 8 to play with battery operated toys. Make sure the batteries are new and in good shape.
4. Be wary of toys with hair or fur that can come loose. This may pose a choking hazard.
5. Be wary of toys with removable attachments.
6. Make sure parts in projectile toys cannot do harm to the eyes, or are not small enough to be swallowed.
7. Ban toys with pointy or sharp edges.
8. Ban toys with strings longer than 6 inches as they may pose a strangulation hazard.
9. Ban toys that are made to be strung across cribs or playpens.
10. Watch out for toys which contain flammable material.
11. Be wary of toy weapons that are too realistic.
12. Do not allow young children to play with toys that involve electricity.
Do not allow older children to play with these types of toys while unsupervised.
13. Be wary of toys with long handles that may pose choking hazards.
