What to Expect Following a Traumatic Brain Injury
Unfortunately there is no rigid set of expectations you can have following a traumatic brain injury. Each case varies and is dependent upon the area of the brain injured.
While some patients will make a full, relatively speedy recovery, others will undergo years of rehabilitation and may live with permanent disabilities ranging in severity from mild to requiring twenty-four hour, personal care. Even those who manage to live fully independent lives following a traumatic brain injury may suffer from a diminished earning capacity due to mental, emotional or physical impairment.
Contrary to popular belief that brain injuries are apparent immediately, sometimes symptoms of traumatic brain injuries do not appear for numerous months or years after the initial injury was sustained, making for an incredibly frightening experience.
While there is no set standard of what to expect after a traumatic brain injury, there are common long-term effects that patients will experience.

Epilepsy
Over 50% of traumatic brain injury victims eventually develop epilepsy. While medications exist to help control seizures, the side effects may not be tolerable. Due to the unpredictable nature of epilepsy, those who suffer from it can never drive without supervision and are at an increased risk for second impact syndrome.
Post Concussion Syndrome
Post concussion syndrome, or PCS, can occur after mild trauma to the brain. Symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury, or PCS, include:
- Apathy
- Confusion
- Irritability
- Slowed mental processing
- Insomnia
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Changes in personality
- Restlessness
- Depression
- Sensitivity to noise or light
- Headaches
- Neck pain
Memory Loss and Blackouts
Common side effects of traumatic brain injury, blackouts are when a person is seemingly cognizant for a period of time but later has no recollection of their actions.
Personality Changes
One of the most frightening aspects of a traumatic brain injury is dealing with what may seem to be an entirely new person. Emotions previously unseen in a person may rise to the surface, including
- Depression
- Unprovoked anger
- Constant crying
- Lack of inhibition
Not only is this mentally trying for loved ones, but these episodes can also lead to violence and suicide. It is not uncommon for these symptoms to appear many months or years after a person has sustained a traumatic brain injury.
Dangerous outbursts aside, a person may begin developing an entirely new personality due to changes in different sectors of the brain. The way a person thinks and feels can be completely altered, resulting in loved ones treating them differently and the victim feeling like a stranger to him or herself.
Living and coping with a traumatic brain injury is an arduous experience.
