Misread X-Rays

 

This case involves the failure to interpret and report the findings of a chest x-ray following the placement of a central line in an 80 year old patient. As a result of the delay in reporting the findings of a pneumothorax on chest x-ray, the patient suffocated and died.

 

This defendant testified that a central line was necessary in this patient so that she may receive IV antibiotics. This defendant admitted that the standard of care following the placement of a central line requires the ordering, performing and interpreting of a chest x-ray as soon as possible to make sure that there is no pneumothorax. If a pneumothorax is found, the standard of care requires immediate placement of a chest tube and inflation of the lung
